XFiles Edition – Server Installation v1.5.5

Doing some exploring, I’ve found a solution to the updates problem that we were having.  So now, the ISO is updated to all but a few of the fewest updates. A couple of updates just didn’t want to install. Either by being integrated, or run later.  But we have approximately 80 updates installed, without issue.  Along with a lot of drivers.  A few people had issues with it BSoDing, but hopefully it will be fixed. I used some other drivers, and it seems how I integrated them caused issues. But them being updated should have fixed that. And most importantly, I’ve used the “Power Pack 3” OEM disk hack to make sure you get PP3. Ironically, this is the only available PP3 OEM disk that you can obtain! But it should eliminate any and all issues with “cqvSvc.exe” issues that pop up a lot.

  1. I have been having a lot of trouble installing WHS (random BSOD issues). I thought I would try this install since it has all of the drivers and updates. Thank you for all of your hard work on this. It insalled fine, but now my Connector software says it needs an update to version 6.0.2414.0, but it is not getting it from my server, and I can’t find it on the internet. Can you help? Thanks.

  2. Drashna,

I have an older version of x-files installed (1.4 I think) and it has always acted a little goofy and thought I might just go ahead and reinstall. Can I do the reinstall and maintain all of the drives I have… cannot afford to lose the 10 TB of data at this point 🙂 It has been a while since I have had to do a reinstall and forget what I need to redo

    Thanks

    Chris

  3. Ive installed 1.5.5 and its working sweet as a nut!

Well done! Keep up the good work!

I look forward to installing a “Vail X-Files Edition” in my server in the not so distant future!

  4. Get “cannot initialise UI”. I have another oem copy and it installs fine.
Am going to burn again on dif disc

  5. Drashna,

I have a question about 1.4 I recall seeing something about you released 1.41 (or something like that) as it had a problem. I never “upgraded” to 1.4 but I do have an issue with the way the console closes when I install an app (seems it just crashes) and not sure if it is related. I hope to get the new version installed this weekend so hopefully this solves the issue

    Thanks

    Chris

  6. If you mean that the WHS console closes every time you install or uninstall an add-in, this is normal. That’s what it’s supposed to do. Annoying yes, but expected.

As for 1.5.5, I’ve fixed about every issue and there shouldn’t be any more that pop up.

v1.4.1 had an issue with reinstalls only, with how System Restore was installed. I posted a “hack” on how to fix it, but it’s fixing in 1.5.x.

@Shaun: I had a feeling that’s what the issue was. I test X:Files on a bare minimum system to make sure it works even on 512MB of RAM. 🙂

  7. Drashna, when I had the “standard” WHS load I would get a dialog box that said the console needed to close (I had to hit OK) Now I get a box that pops up but I don’t see any writing (or OK box) then the entire console closes and I get a notification I lost connection to the console.

Maybe one of the installed add in’s is not playing well with others??

  8. Ah. Definitely crashing then. Or an issue with network connection. Could be a number of things, but reinstalling would probably fix it, even if you used a “vanilla” WHS disk.

  9. I am getting a BSOD after the first install whenever my motherboard has AHCI or RAID enabled on the SATA ports. I need all those ports, as my drives are all SATA.

    Any tips?

  10. I stumbled upon this site accidentally. I have a HP media smart server EX475 (with the memory just upgraded to 2gb). The problem i am having is that under hardware status – the software version i am getting is 1.1.3.19049. I know this is an old software version but my whs refuses to update (always saying there are no updates available.) and on the home page (within the connector software) it says Last Update XX/XX/XX. I do however have PP3 installed which leads me to believe its a problem with the connector software.
I was ready to backup my entire server and do a complete factory reset/reinstall of the entire system from scratch but then I came upon this site.
Will X:Files help me with a HP mediasmart windows home server?

  11. Unfortunately, I don’t have a version for the MediaSmart Server. Sounds like it’s not grabbing the updates from HP properly. Have you messed around with the ports that the built in website uses? IF so, I believe that causes issues.

  12. Drashna Jael’re:

Alexander, what chipset are you using? I’m getting a few reports of the ICH8-10 chipsets not working right.

This is the exact motherboard I am using: http://bit.ly/d3z28b

To be fair, the retail WHS does the exact same thing… I was just hoping that 1.5.5 had it fixed.

If I recall, someone said this was because during the first part of the install it uses VistaPE which has the correct drivers for AHCI and the actual OS uses 2003–which is built around WinXP–and that is what causes the issue.

I am willing to test things if you would like. Let me know if I can help in any way.

So if I have x-files installed and then do a plain install will it mess up the partions that I setup using the x-files installation or will those get saved as part of the server reinstall process?

  14. If you mean the resized sys partition, yes the vanilla installer program sees that and preserves it. I’ve done a good number of tests to make sure it doesn’t screw up stuff.

  15. @alexander, I can’t even tell what chipset your board uses! Other than vague references to the “GeForce 9300”, and no real mention of the actual chipset on the nvidia site…. I’m at a loss.

If it gets completely past the first part and to a reboot, there *is* hope though. Try downloading the XP drivers for the nForce 9 chipset (as close as I can tell), and extract the sata/raid drivers and hit “F6” during the blue screen installer and load those (you’ll need a floppy IIRC). If that works, let me know.

You know what, I just looked at the site and you are completely correct–it makes no actual mention of the chipset at all.

    What. The. Fudge. XD

I know that it uses the 730i chipset though. Ran CPUZ on it from an old bootcd I had laying around.

I did try and install again and I did press F6 and it asked for a floppy explicitly. I will have to see if there is a store nearby that I can purchase a USB floppy from and then return it when I am finished with it. XD

I just got some free time to install the server again, and it seemed to have worked. Meaning, I got to the desktop and it was not BSOD-looping forever. I had to buy a USB floppy drive, and disks! Imagine the looks I got buying 40-year old tech! They only had two stacks of floppies in the entire store.

I will do further testing later, as I have work in 6 hours, and need to get at least 4 hours of sleep.

  18. I have installed, and the SATA drivers work just fine… However, the installed addins from the page are not showing up on my console and they are unable to be uninstalled.

  19. @alex: funny how old things seem to still be useful! And thanks for all your time!

@spokehedz: Sounds like an issue with the network drivers. the NIC installed right? CHeck the We Got Served wiki for how to manually remove an add-in. For you, though, I think you’ll only need to remove registry entries.

  20. Drashna Jael’re:

Yeah, something went bonkers with the install. manually uninstalling did the trick. Thanks for all your help once again.

  21. Drashna, Thanks for x:/files saved me so much time moving from the trial to the full version :-).
A couple of things though, 1.) I had to manually uninstall all of the add in’s it put on as they were causing .net errors and I couldn’t uninstall them through the console, everything was fine when I reinstalled using the console though
2.) The uTorrent add in doesn’t work with version 2.0, so its a case of do without the add in or using the old 1.8 version of uTorrent.
Again, thanks for all your work

  22. I run through the installer, and it reboots for the first time, it logs in, and before it can run the installer I get ”Continuing to configure storage failed: The system cannot find the path specified. (error code 0x80070003).” and “Unable to install .NET Framework 2.0”.

The DVD drive is there, but it cannot seem to read the disk. I’m going to try another DVD drive, and another disk, and will report back if I have any luck. Anybody else got any suggestions?

  23. @Phil, I’ll probably just stop including it. It’s a poor interface, and you’re better off adding a url link to Advanced Admin Console!

@StormPooper, sounds like a bad disk or bad burn. Try another DVD or try using a USB Flash Drive to install (which is faster, and you don’t waste disks!)

  24. Turned out to be the DVD drive, installed fine once I ran it from there.

Only problem I had was the only add-in that worked was the WHS toolkit. I had to copy the addin installers to SoftwareAdd-Ins and then run the installers manually for the ones I had selected on the screen shown in this post. Then they registered.

Other than that it works great, thanks.

  25. I figured it was the DVD drive, That error is usually because of that.

As for the add-ins, there should be an “XFiles” log file in c:, could you email me that (drashna(at)breakinghomeserver.com) so I could look at it? THough I’m pretty sure it’s a “network error”. Your NIC identified correctly? And connected to network?

  26. can this version receive updates Micro$, and when I installed, it asked for a key, and gave me 30 days help

  27. Johhny, this is a modification of the OEM disk. There are no cracks included. This is meant for people with legitamate copies of Windows Home Server. I will not help anyone crack a piece of software that is ONLY $100 (or less) and that is ABSOLUTELY WORTH EVERY PENNY.

  28. Sorry if I come out a bit hostile, but I feel that WHS is absolutely worth $100. Especially because you can use it about the same way as Server 2003. 🙂

It’s just an OEM disk, so if you have an RTM or PP1 product key, it will use that just fine.

  29. I am encountering an error: ‘Could not load UI subsystem’ just after the graphical scroll bars, before I’m able to select my installation options.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this issue?

  30. Hi again, I’ve been trying to get this install to work for most of today.
I’ve determined that its due to my Intel ICH8R disk controller.

Could you please advise of a way that I can slipstream the drivers for the Intel AHCI ICH8R drivers into the 1.55 disk. I have tried, using a combination of nLite and PowerISO, and got further (Able to get the first menu options to choose language and keyboard options, but boxes are blank with no options). I think this is also due to the controller.

Please advise of the correct method to slipstream the drivers. Link to my motherboard:
    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2418

  31. It takes 2 hours to boot, then can’t find my ICH9R controller… 🙁 I’d love to know how to slipstream these drivers?

  32. Yeah, it seems like the ICHxR drivers aren’t working properly. Earlier versions of XFiles Edition may work fine for it (though avoid reinstalls, a couple versions have issues with them).

That or head over to We Got Served, and check out the “slipstreaming” tutorial in the wiki for how I’ve added drivers.

  33. Awesome, thanks! I’m just going to add the drivers then. I’m trying to do a reinstall on a 16TB WHS, so a fresh install is just not an option.

  35. It didn’t go well. Now the vista pe won’t ever fully load. I even let it go overnight. I don’t think this is a driver problem, but more of a conflict of some sort. The IAAHCI and IASTOR drivers in your distro look fine to me, they are just a little dated. I even tried rebuilding a base WHS power pack 1 disc and adding the IAAHCI drivers, with the same result. The thing is that the stock WHS disc does detect my ICH9R, but I can’t find the drivers it is using, as they don’t seem to be the supplied Intel IAAHCI drivers. My problem is that my data is on a Si3132 esata disk system, and trying to load those drivers via F6 on the stock WHS disc just makes my PC speaker beep for a long time then fails sys disc format… My sys disk is on the ICH9R disk system. I think the next step is to locate the stock MS drivers in WHS that it is using and eliminate them. Anyway, I’m going to get this problem solved one way or another, and I’ll let you know what I figure out.

  36. Ok, I got it sorted out. MS has pretty tightly integrated their own generic driver pack. It has multiple functions, one of which is MSAHCI generic AHCI driver. This is all located in the MSHDC folder. Your intel IAACHI and IASTOR drivers are basically loading on top of the MS drivers, so you have two drivers fighting over the same hardware. I cannot seem to remove the MSHDC drivers as they supply so many functions that WHS becomes unbootable without it. So, basically I just deleted your Intel drivers which would be the IAACHI and IASTOR folders which then reverts to the MS generic driver which works fine unless you happen to pair it with a Sil3132 esata card as I did. I decided just to ditch the Sil3132 card and purchased a Highpoint RocketRaid 622 card and X:/files 1.5.5 is doing a server install right now… I’m happy with this solution, as the Sil3132 was always buggy anyway, kicking up timeout errors on my hard drives on a regular basis. Since Silicon Image has not updated the drivers for that chipset in 3 years, I don’t think it’s ever going to get fixed. Email me at gaymon.wright at gmail dot come if you have any questions. Oh, and I almost forgot, thanks for all your hard work! X:/Files rocks!

  37. I tried the XFiles Edition first time a year ago, but with no success. At the first screen when you choose country and language there was no options. All blank.
Today I tried the latest version, but still the same. So its useless for me. I have to reinstall my server.

    Any idea whats wrong?

    Thanks.

  38. Harald, does the original version of WHS work fine on your system? If not, I think you may have a greater issue. I’ve never experienced the problem you describe, nor have I heard of anyone experiencing it either. “UI subsystem failure”, definitely but not just nothing showing up.

  39. Drashna, yes it does. I also made a custom install cd last year because of Intel Ahci drivers and it worked.
I tried your newest Xfiles now because I wanted integrated PP3, but as I said the newest version have the same problem.

The pc is self-Build, but nothing special. Gigabyte MB.

    Any more information you want?

    Thanks again.

  40. Nope. The intel ich drivers are a PITA. I’ve had nothing but issues with them. Lots of people report issues with them. I’ll be building another version soon, and hopefully without the issues.

  41. FYI, when I said “At the first screen when you choose country and language” the correct is “Time and currency format” and “Keyboard or input method”. One of the first screen.

  42. I have just reinstalled (New Installation) my WHS using a new self-made install cd using latest Intel drivers and PP3 from Eval disk.

So far everything is working. Hopefully I will not have any problems after 30 days because of Eval..

  43. Are drivers for the RS780G chipset included? I purchased this and want to install it on my Inspiron Zino HD and the ATA drivers are giving me fits.

  44. There *appears* to be a corrupted/incorrecly compressed file in the image – IGFXSRVC.DL_ in folder 059 (SVR_2003i386NLDRV59IGFXSRVC.DL_). I say appears, because it could always be PEBCAK, but I tested it thusly:

1)Downloaded image and burned to DVD. When installing and copying files it choked on that one.
    2) Assumed bad burn to DVD, so made a USB drive boot instead. Same thing, same file.
    3) Searched and found 10 copies of IGFXSRVC.DL_ in different folders. Copied all of them and tried “expand.exe” on them. All expanded correctly except the one in folder 059.
    4) Downloaded image again just to ensure not corrupted from original download. Same problem.

For now, I just skipped the file; will continue on with install. Thanks for all your work – I know how fun slipstreaming these ISOs are and testing to ensure they work correctly.

  45. Roger; although I made a typo (or was tired.) it is actually the compressed .EXE not the .dll that has the error. Could just replace the compressed file with the uncompressed one in the ISO if you were worried about it. Helped when I was slipstreaming drivers into XP in the day.

C’est la vie. Not needed for my build anyway 🙂

  46. And…part 3. I downloaded the ISO again, and this time was able to decompress the .DLL and the .EXE in 059 directory. So, maybe it was a self-induced error from something I did. Just seemed strange that it was reproducible with two separate downloads. Of course I never checked the ISO against an MD5 hash, sooooo my bad.

Anyhow, if you check and find out those files expand fine from your image, you can just delete my posts, or laugh and call me stupid. 🙂

  47. Suggestion: Some Nvidia chipset drivers that are slipstreamed can cause issues for older sets; notably the Nforce series. I would still leave them in because they allow ethernet functionality, but if users are experiencing BSODs, have them check their GART, ethernet, IDE and motherboard chipset drivers and go to Nvidia’s site and roll them back.

It seems to usually be the ethernet drivers, although I’ve seen some conflicting reports on whether it is the Nvidia firewall or the drivers themselves. For my WHS it was the ethernet drivers. Some have problems with the SATA. I have a set I collected that seem to work fairly well, and once I have my WHS restored I’ll post a link to them.

  48. Stephen, thanks for the suggestion. But from what I’ve seen, the nForce series is crap all around. And I’m speaking from experience.

I had an nForce2 board, and if I installed the official SATA drivers, it would BSoD if there where sata2 disks attached, but the generic MSFT drivers worked just fine…
So if you do have links to a working set, very much appreciated!

  49. My existing licensed WHS install ($!$$#$#$!$$ Microsoft) is having the “cqvSvc.exe” problem.

Will this WHS install provide the reinstall option if I am reinstalling over an existing install?

  50. Sidney, before using this, have you tried to “re-register” command for the COM stuff. (should be listed on the MSFT forums for WHS)? That fixes it for most people, IIRC.

And yes, this modifies stuff *after* the normal install process for the most part. So you should definitely get a the reinstall option if your system is “eligible” for it. (aka, right config)

  51. I installed your XFiles Edition – Server Installation v1.5.5. After it finishes the Server is at the PP2 level. I expected it to be PP3.

I activated and it looks great so far.

Should I allow auto updates or should manually select which update I allow? Then which updates should I allow?

Did I read somewhere PP4 is scheduled to come out soon?

    Thanks again!

  52. Hi,

Im new to WHS, just bought a pre assemble setup (acer AH342), i want to change the drives and do a full installation, do anyone have a guide how to, i dont know much about WHS, i do build my own PCs and have installed windows multiple times, but here the Server dont have even a VGA port see what am i doing, so im just looking for some guide.

    Thanks,

  53. Hi there,

I installed X-files a long time ago after finding it on the web and it’s ben running flawlessly for the last couple of years. but now its slowing down and I think a reinstall is the only way to fix it.

Problem is I cant find the file to download it. I’m not a demonoid user so cant use that link is there any other place I can access this?

    Cheers,
    emu

  54. Wonderful MOD to MS install process! I needed to reinstall due to my lack of info when I installed the first time. I installed with sata set to IDE – no hot swap and sata 5-6 non working due to no drivers.(RAID/AHCI) Icing on the cake was the fact that I never was able to get all the board drivers installed. Cherry on top? I couldn’t get my system to boot off of the original disk for a reinstall!?!

    ASUS M3A78-EM
Only minor glitch when using v1.5.5 was that I still needed to f6 the RAID/AHCI drivers(floppy) or I would blue screen on the second reboot.
Pro’s far outweigh this glitch. Thanks for all your efforts in making x-files!! No driver warnings in hardware, what a plus.

    Thanks!!

  55. hi, great mod! just installed, trying to activate and says need valid key. during install used key from pid.ini. what to I need to do to get it activated?

  56. @R2JJS: Could you email me the drivers that work? drashna at wegotserved.co.uk.

@cbgk82: You need a legitimate key to get it activated. I will not discuss cracks, other than how to fix them when (not if) they go bad. Oh, and NONE of them work 100%. At best, they’ll leave you with a broken system in 30-60 days. Get a key, it’s only $99 for WHS.

  57. I just installed but wish I could get back to the initial red setup screen to check off some of the extras and hacks that I passed over initially. Is there any way to get a second chance (w/o reinstalling)? Great version you put together!

After running WHS for several years, I found out I had missing or corrupted backup clusters way back, so I decided to start over. This time on Hyper-V. I’ll run WHS 2011 in a VM also and explore how much synergy I can get that way.

  58. @Mick: 99% of the “extra” stuff is just automated hacks. If you want to look at the We Got Served Wiki, as that’s where the hacks came from originally.

Also, most of the files that we used are in the C:install directory. Including some of the exe’s we use and some of the scripts we launch, as well as the “internal” Microsoft setup process.

  59. Does this happen to have all the drivers for the ss4200 scaleo NAS box? I slipstremed before but I am having issues and need to reinstall. I wasn’t sure if I needed to add the drivers back in or if I do and they were already in there if it would mess it up. It’s the follow drivers:
    Intel Chipset Drivers
    Sata AHCI “F6” drivers
    Network Adapter Drivers

    From http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Server+Products&ProductLine=Intel%C2%AE+Storage+Systems&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Entry+Storage+System+SS4200-EHW&OSVersion=Windows+Home+Server

    1. The drivers *should* be included for that, but I believe it’s an ICH chipset and for whatever reason, those seem to be the most picky about actually working. If you want more details about what drivers are supported, driverpacks.net has a comprehensive list, as that’s where I grabbed all the drivers.

  60. Has anyone re-installed WHS v1 recently? I am trying to re-install WHS v1 after motherboard failure but the install is hanging up near the end on doing updates? for hours!

Where can I get XFiles Edition – Server Installation v1.5.5? I can’t find it anywhere.

    Thanks, Clark

Did you ever confirm if it works beyond 120 day evaluation?

    1. Sorry, Mime types were bad. I’m not sure why they reverted. But the torrent and nzb files should work properly now.

As for hotfile… not much I can do there. Other sites are VERY diligent about removing content (despite the fact that Microsoft knows who is distributing these files, and gave me an MVP award *after* doing so).

As for the OEM/Eval thing. The SVR_2003 directory is completely responsible for that (and is the underlying OS). The WHS Components only read and pass along that information. And as the XFiles disks is actually an Eval converted disk… I’m 100% certain that it will work.

  62. How long does it typically take to download using torrent? This is my first torrent download. It has been running for 24 hours and only 2/3’s of it has been downloaded. Reminds me of the days when we only had 300 baud telephone modems.

      1. Hi Drahna,

Any chance of putting, those hotfile links onto rapidshare or another filesharering place

        pretty please

        With Cherries on top!

  63. Any Chance of putting those links back on to rapidshare or another free site as the torrent is just taking forever

pretty please with cherries on top.

  64. Hi,
    thank´s for the answer.
The torrent wouldn´t start, I´ve waited couples oh hours.

    I never used usenet.

Is this usenext? or how I can connect to download this?
    Sorry, a very noob question.

    Thanks a lot
    Serkan

  65. Well, I’m seeding the torrent, so that’s odd…. But not many other seeds.

As for usenet, you’d need a paid account for it, and a client such as sabnzbd. But if this was a one time download, a block account (pay for GB) would be the best bet.

But as for file links… Unless somebody has a reliable, high speed site…. it’s a DMCA issue. I can post it a bunch of places, but it will get taken down. And rather quickly. 🙁

Also… WHSv1 is no longer is support by Microsoft, and no longer gets any updates of any kinds (including critical security updates). So it may be in your best interest to upgrade.
WHS2011 is available for ~$40-50 reliably… and spend $20 on StableBit DrivePool and you get a much better system than WHSv1 anyways.

  66. Good day! I could have sworn I’ve been to this website before but after reading through
some of the post I realized it’s new to me. Nonetheless, I’m definitely delighted I found it and
I’ll be bookmarking and checking back often!

  67. Sorry to come back here so late in the game, but my father in law dropped off an aspire easystore h340 (no HDDs in it) with me to try and get running. Are you still seeding the server iso? I see one peer, but I’m getting no DL speed currently.

He insists on using WHS if it’s at all humanly possible, so I’ll give this a shot, and perhaps buy 2011 later if I need to.

Thanks for all you do (I’ve been reading old posts and the such)

Also, I have the recovery disks/client install software disks, and the product key (on the system itself) but I’m assuming there’s no other way to get the install media?

If there is, please let me know! Thanks!

    1. Sorry, no, I’d stopped seeding, as nobody was really downloading this anymore.

That said, if you have the recovery DVD, that’s all you need. Just run the recovery stuff and it will re-image the server. No Product key or anything is needed in this case, as it should be OEM activated.

This process is documented in the user manual for the hardware (Link). Page 118.

      1. Ok, thanks for the quick response!

I haven’t worked with servers of any sort in 10ish years, so I was in a little panic mode.

I do have the recovery disk, but thought for some reason there was something else I was missing.

I didn’t have the manual, and that’s probably a bit stupid of me, so thanks for the link.

Turns out my biggest problem was using a faulty dvd drive, and things are looking good now.

Thanks, and have a wonderful day!

        1. You are very welcome!

As for the recovery disk, there is that, and the client restore disk, as well. Though, depending on the specific time frame, you may only have one.

As for the faulty DVD drive, that could cause issues. I’d recommend creating an ISO of the DVD, and keeping it on a local system. That way, you can see about mounting it, which may go faster in genera than normal access.

          1. Just thought I’d pop in here to mention this:

I forgot to stop the torrent, but now I’m at 98.8%. If jump on and let it finish, I’ll probably seed whenever my PC is on (almost everyday I’m not on vacation) to help other people grab this if they’re interested.

No worries if you don’t have the file/the time, but I figured, hey, I’m already so close, why not try and finish it off.

(There are 2 other peers, one other guy is maxed out with me at 98.8%, the other somewhere around 50%)

          2. Well, it will likely stop at 99.7%, as it’s “broken”. Not sure why. But the ISO should work just fine.

Alternatively, if you have a usenet account, that still works and is complete.
